Who is C.A.R.E.S?
CARES is an all-volunteer, non-profit rescue organization that is licensed with the Ga Dept. of Agriculture. We receive no government funding and rely solely on contributions of caring animal lovers. CARES operates on a NO Kill philosophy. Our main focus is on rescuing shelter animals at risk for euthanasia. We work with several area animal control facilities to pull these animals to safety when their mandatory hold time is up. CARES consists of a network of foster homes where the animal is kept in a nurturing, loving environment as they are vetted, socialized and awaiting their perfect home. In keeping with our mission statement, CARES has programs to help educate the public on pet care and responsibilities as well as facilitating the community in low cost sterilization options for their pets. |
Rescue
Because they are coming out of a shelter environment, all our rescues are quarantined for 14 days to rule out infectious diseases. However during this time they have already started veterinary treatment. Every animal is an individual so the required time from rescue to adoption is always different. Some need more vet care than others, especially those harboring infectious diseases, heartworm positive dogs, animals with internal injuries, broken bones, nursing moms, etc.
Vet care is only a part of the “new face” that each rescue receives. The number one reason that pets are surrendered to shelters is due to behavioral issues. CARES addresses this by starting remedial training/socialization. We do our best to make sure everyone starts their new life with at least basic training under their belt.
Adoption
Once ready for adoption, each pet is listed on several websites such as www.petfinder.com with pictures, a complete biography and sometimes even video. Our volunteers also attend adoption events on the weekends at the Acworth PetSmart on Hwy 41 in addition to other locations where our pets are showcased.
Our adoption process consists of an application, sometimes a home visit and a required vet reference verifying responsible care of your current/past pets. We have found this to be the best indicator of future pet care. To request an application: [email protected]
Every animal adopted through CARES receives:
*All vaccinations including DHPPL, Bordetella & rabies
*De-wormed for all internal parasites including whips, hooks, rounds, tapes, coccidia & giardia
*Tested negative for heartworms & tick borne diseases & already on a routine of monthly flea & heartworm meds
*Micro-chip implanted, including lifetime registration
*Spayed/Neutered; In addition, teeth cleaning, hernia removal, cherry eyes, dew claw removal, other known issues corrected before adoption
Education
CARES volunteers work hard to help the community through several educational programs. From going into schools and talks at community clubs to inviting kids to our farm to learn hands on pet care and visiting senior centers just to brighten someone’s day, we strive to make a difference.
Did you know that only 1 out of every 10 pets adopted through a shelter does not live in that same home just 6 months later? We are hoping to change this by educating the community in these key areas:
Sterilization
Spay/neuter is crucial if we are to reach a day when there are no unwanted pets in shelters. CARES is dedicated to bringing low cost options to families who could not otherwise afford to have their pets fixed. The Atlanta Humane Society SUV (surgical utility vehicle) comes to our farm 5 times a year to do 55-60 low cost surgeries at a time. We also help coordinate a low cost S/N transport to West Ga Spay Clinic once a month. If you are interested in finding out more about these opportunities, send us an e-mail: [email protected] or visit the Low Cost Sterilization section of the site.

Ways You Can Help
- Adopt – please consider adoption! Buying pets promotes breeding more animals into an already overpopulated world. Even if you are looking for a particular breed, there are breed specific rescue groups.
- Foster – have room in your home for one more pooch or kitty? Rescue groups are always in need of a safe haven for their animals to hang out while looking for their new family.
- Volunteer – have time on your hands that you want to get down and dirty? CARES can always use help with bathing, cleaning, walking, playing with animals, transporting or helping at adoption events!
- Donate Funds– It goes without saying that rescue groups are in the most need of funds! 100% of all donations go toward the animals in our care. We have a lot of Special Needs Dogs so we greatly appreciate donations! Checks made to CARES can be mailed to P.O. Box 1314 Cedartown Ga 30125 or you can make a PayPal donation to [email protected]
- Donate Items – CARES has a Wishlist of dog & cat items set up on Amazon. Some less thought of items that we are always in need of are Gas cards, HE laundry detergent, Piddle pads, General purpose cleaner & paper towels
- Sponsor a pet – Through our CARE Giver program, you can sponsor a pet's medical care. Some of our animals require a lot more vet care than others and will be in rescue for a long time. Others may never be able to be adopted due to circumstances that they can't control. If you can't adopt, consider sponsoring a pet's vet or personal care.
